The Scottish Parliament has considerable power and responsibility over electoral law.

Last week, the Parliament considered whether to give legislative consent to parts of the Representation of the People Bill.

This week, it was considering how to change the candidacy rights for foreign nationals.

It was an honour to join the conversation and give evidence in both sessions. I made the case for:

  • 🗳️ automatic voter registration
  • 🗳️ abolishing the edited/open register
  • 🗳️ limits on party donations
  • 🗳️ consolidating electoral law
  • 🗳️ inclusive voting and candidacy rights
  • 🗳️ modernising the candidacy process to collect better data
  • 🗳️ measures to prevent foreign interference in elections

The decisions made in Holyrood will have consequences not only for Scottish democracy, but for the UK and beyond. Do follow the work of the committee as it’s important work continues!
