Last week we launched a new report in Parliament on the UK electoral franchise.
The report estimated that there are 4.4 million resident adults in the UK who are unenfranchised at Parliamentary elections – and 1.2 million at local elections.
They are legally resident; contribute economically & socially to society; and, are bound by the decisions of their representatives.
The report sought to draw lessons from Scotland and Wales where all legally resident people are able to express their voice and have it formally listened to in some elections. It was introduced smoothly and without any problems.
Elections are an opportunity to have voices heard but also to listen to others. An inclusive electoral franchise could help democracies to listen and learn from everyone to collectively solve problems together – in an age of conflict and disruption.
