Political leadership

How can we assess national political leaders?  How successful was Tony Blair for example?  He won several consecutive general elections for the Labour Party, was credited with helping build peace in Northern Ireland and oversaw a period of continued growth in the British economy.  For some, however, his leadership failed to combat social inequality in Britain and was marred by the decision to go to war in Iraq.  Consider this (very positive) video:

Was Tony Blair a successful leader?

A statecraft approach

I am currently working on developing a methodology for assessing political leaders with Jim Buller of the University of York.  We make the case for using  statecraft approach to assess political leadership, as originally developed by Jim Bulpitt in a forthcoming paper in the British Journal of Politics and International Relations.  In the article we apply to approach to Tony Blair and new Labour:

In April 2012, we will present at the UK-PSA2012 conference re-assessing Gordon Brown with the approach.  The paper will be made available here shortly:
  • Buller, J. & James, T.S. (2012) 'Re-assessing the statecraft of Gordon Brown', Political Studies Association Annual Conference, Ulster, April 2012.
We are currently working on further research.  More research findings will be reported on here in due course.
